According to Khairy, the scheme would allow youths earning below RM4,000 to buy a car without having to pay for tax and excise duties. He added that the scheme would lower the prices especially for first-time buyers. However, the scheme should only include moderately priced cars that are assembled in the country. Thailand had a similar first-car scheme where buyers above 21 were allowed to purchase Thai-built cars priced below than one million baht. Unfortunately, the scheme backfired, leaving thousands of customers defaulting.
