Cecil Chao, the Hong Kong billionaire who made headlines in September 2012 for offering nearly $65 million to any man who could turn his lesbian daughter straight (after she eloped to France with her partner to get hitched), has now upped the ante to $120 million.
The property magnate is convinced that his daughter, 33-year-old Gigi Chao, is “still single” despite the fact that two years ago she exchanged vows with her partner Sean Eav.
After thousands of eligible bachelors failed to change his daughter’s sexual orientation or sweep her off her feet, he decided to raise the reward.
Earlier this month, The Financial Times reported that Chao, 77, would provide “a moderately deluxe life” to whomever succeeded. “I would not force her to marry a man, but obviously I would, from my point of view, prefer her to be married and to have grandchildren,” he added.
“I’m not saying that she’s not okay to be gay,” Cecil Chao told ABC News 20/20 in October 2012. “I mean it’s her own choice and her own tendency, but she should make sure she knows what she wants. Maybe what she wants today is different [than] what she wants in the future.”
While the hopeful father’s demands may appear spiteful, to her, they aren’t.
According to his Gigi Chao, who happens to be a highly respected LGBT activist and founding member of the local gay rights group Big Love Alliance, he is “from another time” and simply does not understand that homosexuality is not something that can just be changed.
“I don’t think my dad’s offering of any amount of money would be able to attract a man I would find attractive,” Chao explained in an interview with the South China Morning Post. “I would be happy to befriend any man willing to donate huge amounts of money to my charity, Faith in Love, provided they don’t mind that I already have a wife. Third and lastly, thank you Daddy, I love you too.”
